The Italian Red Cross is an organisation founded in 1864 and is auxiliary to the Italian public authorities. It is a National Society part of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, and of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), also contributing to the Global Surge providing a ready to deploy Emergency Response Unit and FACT (Field Assessment and Coordination Team). The Italian Red Cross is recognised as an “operational structure” of the National Civil Protection System by the legislative decree n.1/2018 (based on the law n.225/1992) with specific duties identified by the Decree of the President of the Council of Ministers 3 October 2008 “addresses to the operational structures and organisation of the civil protection system”.The Italian Red Cross also have agreement and memorandum of understanding with both the Italian Civil Protection Department (enlarging the mandate to keep in operational readiness some specific assets: n.2 population assistance modules (camps), n.1 field command and control centre, n.1 base camp, n.1 cooking centre for food distribution). The ItRC has developed solid experiences in complex emergency response in national and international context, providing rescue, aid and humanitarian assistance to people affected by natural or manmade disaster and to vulnerable groups. Particularly, ItRC is involved in:
- Logistic support in emergency
- Search and Rescue activities with specialized staff
- Healthcare, first aid and medical assistance for victims of disaster; deployment of logistic health field structure
- Early recovery and logistic for the affected population
- Relief and humanitarian aids’ distribution
- Social and psychological support to people and humanitarian workers
WASH (water sanitation and hygiene promotion) - Emergency Response Unit (base camp) module coordination in international emergencies
- Operation Coordination support (data collection, information flow and rapid reporting).
