The Emergency Services Academy Finland (ESAF) provides education for firefighters, sub-officers, fire officers and emergency response centre operators in Kuopio, Finland. It also offers a wide variety of specially tailored further training and in-service training for national and international professionals in the rescue and emergency field. In addition to providing training to supply labour for the rescue services and emergency response centres, ESAF provides preparedness training for disturbances in normal conditions and emergency conditions as well as training for international civil crisis management tasks. ESAF is involved in the research and development functions in the field. The Academy is also responsible for maintaining the assignment register of the rescue services and the central library of the rescue field. The Academy is supervised by the Finnish Ministry of the Interior. The Ministry decides on the level of Finland’s preparedness for international civil protection operations and the acquisition of the relevant resources.
