PPRD East 3 Disaster Risk Management Webinar Series
Webinar #1 topic
The Forest Fires in Sweden 2018 – what did we learn and which
measures have we taken to strengthen our preparedness for future forest
fires
Date: Wednesday 6 October, 12-13 CET
Presenter: Ms Anna-Karin Hamrén, Programme Manager, National and Civil
Protection Operations Section, Response and Operations Department
Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency (MSB)

Registration: Webinar Registration - Zoom

Description:
This webinar will focus on the exceptional forest fire season of 2018 in Sweden, where the risk level was extreme nation-wide and fires raged across the country. The European Civil Protection Mechanism (UCPM) was activated and the operation became the largest response operation in the history of the UCPM. This session will discuss how the Swedish Rescue Services were organized at the time and the lessons on what needed to be strengthened in local and national preparedness, as well as on transboundary and regional levels in order to respond to the more frequent and more severe forest fires in the future.
Learning objectives:
After the webinar, participants have;

  • Knowledge about the main challenges faced by the Swedish Rescue Services during the great forest fires in 2018.
  • Knowledge about the measures Sweden has taken to strengthen the preparedness for future forest fires.
  • Been given the opportunity to reflect on how a similar situation would affect your country and the possible challenges.

Discussion questions to consider:
- How would similar forest fires affect your country? What do you think would be the main challenges for your country?
- How well are your Rescue Services prepared today and what might possibly need to be done to strengthen the preparedness
for great forest fires in the future?
- Does your Country/organization have well known routines for requesting international aid and Host Nation Support?
